Mike Seeger, the influential player and music historian, passed away on Friday. In the 1950s, Mike was a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers; we'd been working promotional materials for Smithsonian Folkways' upcoming 3-CD collection of Rambers music. Mike also played on Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' album Raising Sand, the tour for which featured OLG poster artwork.
I'll turn to the words of Bob Dylan, who wrote about Seeger in his Chronicles Vol. 1: "Mike was unprecedented. As for being a folk musician, he was the supreme archetype. He could push a stake through Dracula's black heart. He was the romantic, egalitarian and revolutionary type all at once."
Our sincere thoughts go out to the Seeger and Folkways families. Rest in peace, Mike.
