I've been volunteering a little of my time with Learn United—A community effort to improve the reading skills of children throughout Allen County. They have a special campaign, Real Men Read, that arranges for professional men in the community to go to third grade classes and read to kids. The idea is that young kids, especially young boys, see their elders setting the example of enjoying and being good at reading. That in turn encourages them to want to read more as well.
It's time well spent—not only am I doing some good for the community, but it's a ton of fun. I remember my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Yonkee (yeah, that was her name), reading the Ramona books to us; it was the highlight of the day. She used funny voices, shouted, laughed, cried and asked questions as she read. It was a long time ago, but I remember it well and I find myself doing the same thing with "my" 3rd grade class. It's really satisfying to be a part of this effort, satisfying to see those kids smiling and laughing with me as I read.
A huge thanks goes to Mrs. Janel Johnson and her enthusiastic, well-behaved 3rd grade class at Wiesser Park Elementary (Fort Wayne's arts magnet elementary school). I've really enjoyed the past two visits and am looking forward to my next. Maybe I'll take a few photos at my next visit and post them up.
I really encourage other men in the community to volunteer with Real Men Read, and everyone in the community to help with Learn United in general. Visit LearnUnited.org to learn more about why this initiative is happening (you'll be shocked by the reasons-why) and how you can help out.
Oh, and happy spring!
