The Meridian, Mississippi native was an original “new Dylan” (along with OLG faves Bruce Springsteen and John Prine) who blew his harmonica right through lower Manhattan and CBGB’s in the late 70s, before becoming one of Nashville’s finest songwriters. Forbert has more than a dozen albums to his credit, including the new Over with You—which ranks among the finest of his career.
It’s a ridiculous coup that we’re able to present him at The B-Side.
In the early OLG days, I was able to do a bit of design work for Mr. Forbert, when the original owner of the “lucky guitar”—Bucky Baxter—joined Steve’s touring band in support of Young, Guitar Days. I went out on the road with the band for a couple of weeks, selling merch, loading amps and, at one point, stringing Steve’s guitar in the middle of a show at Ram’s Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD. It was around that time that I started thinking that another guitar, the one I had purchased from Baxter, had something mercurial and special about it…
Forbert performing at The B-Side brings one of the oldest One Lucky Guitar stories full circle. I find myself shaking my head as I type this—if I hit ‘post,’ is it really happening? And then I’m reminded of a particular Forbert lyric: “It’s often said that life is strange, oh yes, but compared to what?”
Beyond all that, Steve is a world-renowned singer/songwriter, a raconteur, a poet, a man out of time, as wild as the wind and with a true sparkle in his eye, and this concert will be an easy candidate for show of the year, and possibly the finest concert you’ve ever seen in Fort Wayne.
