Kern and Burn: Conversations With Design Entrepreneurs

At the end of last year, I was invited to contribute to an incredible publication called Kern and Burn. In addition to 30 articles from design entrepreneurs, 12 illustrators were asked to contribute a full-page spread as it related to themes throughout the book. I was asked to provide something that relates to the phrase, “Make it up as you go.” My piece is a fictional hodge podge checklist of guidelines for exhibiting good design practices and staying fresh. Copy from the illustration: “In accordance with the guidelines of the S.W.A. (Society of Wandering Artisans) Feedback Retrieval Authority, if you find areas of this checklist to be irrelevant to your individual workload please create your own.”

From Kern and Burn: “Kern and Burn: Conversations With Design Entrepreneurs is a beautiful two-color book that features candid conversations with 30 leading designers who have founded startups, channeled personal passions into self-made careers and taken risks to do what they love. In this book they share their failures, successes, and perspectives. Our hope is that you can learn from them — not to follow in their footsteps, but to chart your own course in parallel, one that allows you to thrive, add value to the world and love what you do.”

You can buy the book, the ebook, or read a couple articles from the publication at kernandburnbook.com.
