Cleaning out the Flat Files

Cleaning out the Flat Files: An OLG Showprint Showreel

In the world of design & marketing boutiques, there exists an ominous piece of storage equipment known as “the flat file”—an ultra-heavy, many-drawered monolith that serves as the dark home to samples of all manner of printed materials that said boutique has created over the years. Especially posters.

Every so often, we try to climb the mountain and organize “the flats”—leaving a trail of crumbs behind us. This year was no different, and the next thing we knew, we were staring at a slightly epic stack of show posters (“showprint” in industry terms). Some with illustrations. Some with a shoe. Some pretty old. Some rather new. Some forgotten. And some blew. (We’re talking about the shows, and the posters.)

So we decided to fire up the camera and make a lil video, and it was a lot of fun. As happens with these things, once we approved the final edit, we realized everything we’d left out (Lymbyc System! Bring Wilco! a couple dozen more!) that must have been in the other flat file, but that’s alright. This isn’t meant to be comprehensive, but rather a few snapshots from a long trip.

There’s a great moment in the movie School of Rock where Jack Black’s character, Dewey Finn, says, “Putting on a great show is the most important thing you can do. One great rock show can change the world!” We say, it doesn’t hurt if it has a killer poster, too.
